Pause the Screen, Chase the Dream - Updated Personal Electronic Devices Policy

Putnam City Students, Staff, and Families,

A new Oklahoma law now requires all school districts in the state to limit student use of personal electronic devices during the school day. In compliance with this new law, the Putnam City Board of Education approved an updated policy at tonight’s regular board meeting.

Beginning with the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, all students must keep all personal electronic devices silenced and put away from bell to bell. The purpose is to reduce distractions, strengthen student engagement, and support a safe, respectful learning environment for everyone.

What this means for students and families:

·       Students must silence and put away all personal devices such as cell phones, smart watches, smart glasses, wireless earbuds/headphones, tablets, and similar items

o   District-issued devices are exempt from this policy

o   Wired headphones may be used with District-issued devices

·       “Bell to bell” refers to the official start of the school day to the official end of the school day, including lunch and passing periods

·       Parents/guardians who need to reach your child during the school day can call the school office for a message to be delivered. Students may use the office phone to call parents/guardians.

Exemptions to the law-

Students may use personal devices only in the following situations:

·       Active emergencies requiring immediate communication for safety, including calling 911

·       Medical monitoring, including glucose checks, etc.

·       In support of documented accommodations listed in a student’s 504 Plan, IEP, or Medical Plan

We know this change may require an adjustment to habits, as well as an increased level of patience by everyone, and we’re here to help during the school day. We encourage families to talk with their student well before the school year begins about the importance of reducing distractions and staying engaged at school.

The updated District Policy ER and more information is available on our website.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in preparing students for success.
